What this is useful for

  • Banner tables and tab books against one or more banners, with filters and bases shown
  • Column-proportions significance letters on every banner column
  • Checking a field file for speeders, straight-liners and duplicate respondents before tabulation
  • Applying value labels to coded exports so tables read in client language
  • TURF, penalty (JAR), relative-importance and NPS analyses on the same file
  • Editable PPTX and DOCX reports that can be refreshed when the data changes

Workflow

  1. Open and clean the file

Open CSV, TSV, XLSX or SPSS .sav in the workspace. Run the Data Cleaner and Label Mapper first when the export needs quality checks or readable labels.

  2. Build the tab book

Set row variables against your banners, choose bases, filters and tests, and save the specification as a local project so the next wave reuses it.

  3. Deliver and refresh

Export XLSX, PDF, PNG or editable PPTX/DOCX. When data is updated, refresh a Crosstabs-generated deck or document instead of rebuilding it.

Why browser-local matters for client work

Client data agreements often restrict where respondent-level files may be processed. In Crosstabs the file you open is parsed and analyzed in your browser; it is not uploaded to a Crosstabs server. Projects are saved in your browser's local storage and move between machines as .ctproj package files that you control.

For AI clients, the local MCP package runs on your machine, so respondent files stay on your device there too.

Tools for the parts of a project around the tables

Quality control: the Data Cleaner flags speeders, straight-liners, duplicates and incomplete interviews and exports a cleaned file. Labels: the Label Mapper turns numeric codes into labels and merges categories.

Specialist analyses: TURF for line optimization, penalty analysis for just-about-right scales, Shapley and Johnson relative importance for key drivers, NPS with margins of error, and k-means segmentation. Trackers: schema-drift checks flag variables and categories that changed between waves.

Honest limits

There are no team workspaces, shared cloud projects, user roles or review workflows; this is by design, because Crosstabs does not hold your projects. Colleagues share work by exchanging exported files or .ctproj packages through your own channels.

Import is limited to 50 MB per file, 1,000,000 respondent rows and 1,000 columns, and the practical size of a run also depends on table shape and the device. Crosstabs does not field surveys, script questionnaires or manage panels. Weighted significance testing is only available for supported saved survey designs; see the weighting guide for what is supported.

FAQ

Is client data uploaded when I use Crosstabs?

No. Files opened in the workspace and the tools are parsed and processed in your browser, and the local MCP package runs on your machine. No Crosstabs service receives respondent files.

Can my team work on the same project?

Not inside Crosstabs. There are no accounts or shared workspaces. You can export a .ctproj project package and pass it to a colleague, who imports it as a separate local copy.

Can I produce client-branded PowerPoint decks?

Crosstabs exports editable PPTX and DOCX reports and can refresh the generated values in a Crosstabs-anchored deck or document while keeping supported manual edits. It does not refresh arbitrary third-party templates.

Does it cost anything for agency use?

No. Crosstabs is free to use with no account and no paid edition.
